Using new power over Ethernet (PoE) switches we can reduce some managerial headaches at Landscape Ontario by powering each of the switches around the office with uninterruptable power supplies (UPS) and switching our devices to PoE compatible ones.
This will allow our phones and WiFi to stay on in the event of a power outage, and more importantly, no longer be susceptible to minor power blinks which often happen in the summer months and can cause maintenance tasks for system administration. (Re-configuring the port VLANs, etc)
The newer wireless hardware uses a much faster 802.11ac protocol as well as being powered by PoE Switches so our wireless bandwidth will improve.
The new phones are also gigabit switches instead of hundred megabit switches which means any user plugged into a phone will have ten times more speed to the internal servers. Being powered over the network cable, there is no longer a need for power adapters in each office either, so there’s less clutter and easier to move phones around when the need arises.
