IPM uses a variety of techniques to effectively suppress or control pests, economically, and in an environmentally sound manner. Elements of a sound IPM program include:
IPM when used in lawn care, significantly reduces the amount of conventional pesticide products.
Research, from Laval University has shown IPM has reduced pesticide usage on lawns by over 65%. Larger reductions occur in areas where insect pressure is limited to non-existent. The most common of traditional lawn care applications is weed control. Using IPM means that only the weeds will be targeted leaving the rest of the lawn treatment free.
Within IPM guidelines, alternative products, when approved for use, can be used in place of conventional products. The IPM principle dictates the least toxic product possible be used for reducing or controlling pest damage.
Implementation of IPM on a large scale by both industry and residents benefits our communities by reducing pesticide usage, while still maintaining high quality and healthy lawns and landscapes. Healthy, vibrant lawns and landscapes provide numerous environmental and economic benefits – good for us all!
